"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."
I've been told by multiple sources that whenever you see "Therefore" you should figure out what its there for.
This therefore is in direct response to the previous chapter of all the great people of our faith who, by faith, did great and marvelous things. Since we know we're surrounded by all those great people, we should get rid of everything that hinders us and do our best to be as great or even greater than those who have gone before us.
He also gives us an example to follow in Jesus cross and to set our eyes on him and not to lose heart as he endured far worse than we will ever have to endure.
